Easiet Way to Create A Heat Map In Excel
|
Heatmaps are very handy tool to the analyze and visualize the large multi-dimensional datasets. They are often used with high-throughput gene expression data like microarray as they can help to identify hidden groups among analyzed genes or association between experimental conditions and gene expression patterns. There are several bioinformatics software to generate the heatmaps but what if you can generate heatmap without downloading any additional software or going some server. In this post I will share some tricks to generate beautiful heatmaps using your very own microsoft excel.

Step 1

I have the gene expression data for 19 genes in 4 different tissues and now I want to make heatmap of the gene expression data for all 19 genes using Microsoft excel
Step 2
Select the gene expression values and go for the
HOME -> CONDITIONAL FORMATTING -> COLOR SCALES -> MORE RULES
Step 3
A pop-up window will open. Now go for
FORMAT STYLES -> 3-COLOR SCALES
You can also coustomize the coloe as per your choice
Step 4
Step 5
Step 6
Step 7
You can remove the expression values from excel cells in two ways. In first method, go for
SELECT DATA -> RIGHT CLICK -> FORMAT CELLS -> CUSTOMS -> PASTE ;;; IN PLACE OF GENERAL IN TYPE MENU
Alternatively, you can copy-paste the whole modified data to Microsoft word -> copy-paste back to Microsoft Excel -> delete data
Alternatively, you can copy-paste the whole modified data to Microsoft word -> copy-paste back to Microsoft Excel -> delete data
